Desktop icons won't display after deleting virus

I recently had a virus on my computer and I had to put the computer into safe mode and then run the antivirus software. The virus was deleted, but now when I put the computer back into the Windows normal operating mode the desktop icons don't appear. Nothing appears except for the preset backround I had, not even the start menu at the bottom. Please help me. Thanks.

Press ctrl+alt+delete
A window will pop up
at the top where it says "file" click it a scroll down to "New Task (Run..)"
Next to where it says "open" type in: explorer.exe
It should make the items come up.
