When you open up the display settings tab,
the background tab and most of the other tabs are missing,
of because we had to clean your system of because something else has happened,
please use Marc's System.zip.

Save the attachment to your desktop and unpack it.
Double click the system.reg and answer with yes.
Restart and check if the problem is solved.

Using Windows XP or ME, turn off System Restore while working at your system.

This tool assists in removing nail, bolder and aurora spyware infections.

Here is the step by step guide:

1. Download the Remover (attached) to your desktop
2. Download (if not already done) the latest Hijackthis and unzip (ZipGenius is free) it into its own folder
(Learn here how to create a new folder: Windows Tutorial.)
3. Reboot into Safe Mode, don´t start anything there, no Internet Explorer Windows or anything else
4. Start the ABIRemover.exe, press install, wait (explorer window will disapear)
5. Reboot directly and again reboot into Safe Mode
6. Fix the random key in the registry with hijackthis (normally HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) and maybe the bolger BHO. Remember the random name and delete it in your system32 directory
7. Reboot into normal mode and run at least one online virus scanner, for example
Panda ActiveScan

You´re done.

Windows XP and ME: Please turn off System Restore while cleaning up your system.

Windows Sysinternals Autoruns

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

Simply run Autoruns and it shows you the currently configured auto-start applications as well as the full list of Registry and file system locations available for auto-start configuration. Autostart locations displayed by Autoruns include logon entries, Explorer add-ons, Internet Explorer add-ons including Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), Appinit DLLs, image hijacks, boot execute images, Winlogon notification DLLs, Windows Services and Winsock Layered Service Providers. Switch tabs to view autostarts from different categories.

You can save logfiles with Autoruns to show them up to specialists to help you to get rid of malware.

Freeware Starter is a startup manager for Microsoft Windows



Starter allows viewing and managing all programs that are starting automatically whenever operating system is loading. It enumerates all hidden registry entries, startup folders' items and some of the initialization files, so that the user could choose to temporarily disable selected entries, edit them, create new, or delete them permanently.



It can list all running processes with possibility to view extended process' information (such as used DLLs, memory usage, thread count, priorities etc.), and terminate selected process (even a Windows NT service, having enough access rights). It's also a Windows' services (and drivers) manager with advanced features.

Note: If the registry editor fails to open the threat may have modified the registry to prevent access to the registry editor. Security Response has developed a tool to resolve this problem. Download and run this tool, and then continue with the removal.

Follow these steps:

1. Download the file UnHookExec.inf and save it to your Windows desktop.

(If you cannot connect to the Internet from the infected computer, download to an uninfected computer then save it to a floppy disk. Then take the floppy disk and insert it in the floppy disk drive of the infected computer.)

Note: The tool has a .inf file extension.
2. Locate the download file, either on the Windows desktop or the floppy disk.

3. Right-click the UnHookExec.inf file and click install. (This is a small file. It does not display any notice or boxes when you run it.)

4. Follow any other instructions for the threat that you are trying to remove.
